I am an emerging Toronto based artist who uses the medium of encaustic in my paintings. In my recent work, Islands of Healing, I explore islands as a metaphor for the healing power of nature. I focus on the islands of Hawaii as a place of transformation, where volcanic activity produces islands that in turn become habitats for flowers, animals and other life forms. I paint using the literal islands to express an interior passage of transformation.
I fell in love with encaustic because of its enormous versatility. I use this versatility to allow my work to reveal itself through techniques including layering, scraping, and dripping.
I dedicate this body of work, Islands of Healing to my parents, Joan and Mike Bancroft for making it possible for me to explore the Hawaiian islands; to my aunt, Jane Bancroft who was not able to follow her dream of painting; and to the spirit of the people of the Hawaiian islands.
